Historic VICTORY for post-secondary students

Hello Glendonites!!

It is my pleasure to announce that the 2009 GCSU Constitution has passed!

Thank you to everyone who voted! Here are the numbers…

Total Votes: 183

No: 12

Yes: 156

Abstain: 15

The constitution required 2/3 of those who voted to vote yes. That means that 122 votes “yes” were needed.

The constitution can be found at www.gcsuconstitution.wordpress.com . Any questions can be directed to me at president@gcsu-aecg.ca .

Renewal is not over! We not have to write/update a number of important bylaws. Keep your eyes and ears open for more public consultations and chances for you to give your suggestions!

• Don’t hesitate to visit the GCSU office in York Hall B-126 for more info on the constitution or how to get more involved, or just to chat!

Merci à tous ceux et celles qui ont vote! Voici quelques détails…

Afin d’être acceptée, la constitution devait recevoir deux tiers des votes, alors 122 votes pour le “oui”.

VICTOIRE historique pour les étudiants post-secondaire

(Le message en français suit.)Dear students,

 

The vast majority of you have heard about the initiative started last week called Fair Student Fares, and I am reporting back to inform you that WE HAVE WON!

Today, student unions from across the GTA organised by the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario successfuly lobbied the TTC for all post-secondary students in the GTA.

As of September 2010, all post-secondary students studying in the GTA regardless of their part or full-time status or age will be able to purchase the student/senior metropass. This metropass will cost $99 ($89 with the TTC Metropass discount plan).

This is a historic victory for all post-secondary students, as it is the first time we see a metropass actually dedicated for post-secondary students. Moreover, there will no longer be shortages as experienced with the VIP pass, as these passes will be available at all TTC stations.

I would like to thank each and every one of you who have signed the Fair Fares petition and/or sent an e-mail to the TTC. Student unity is a marvelous thing and this is a concrete example of how we can achieve results when we organise!

La majorité d’entre vous avez entendu parler de la campagne Tarifs étudiants justes (Fair Student Fares) entamée la semaine dernière. Je vous écris afin de vous anoncer que NOUS AVONS GAGNÉ!

Cet après-midi, les syndicats étudiants de Toronto et de ses environs, organisés par la Fédération canadienne des étudiantes et étudiants-Ontario ont réussi à mettre de la pression sur la CTT de la part de tous les étudiantes et étudiants au niveau post-secondaire étudiant à Toronto et dans ses environs.

À partir du mois de septembre 2010, tous les étudiants et étudiantes au niveau post-secondaire de Toronto et de ses environs, indépendamment de leur statut d’étudiant à temps plein ou partiel ou de leur âge, auront accès à la passe d’étudiant/âge d’or au coût de 99$ (89$ avec le programme de rabais de la CTT).

C’est une victoire d’envergure pour les étudiantes et étudiants du niveau post-secondaire, puisque c’est la première fois que l’on reçoit une passe qui nous est spécifique. De plus, il n’y aura plus de manque de passes, comme lorsque les passes VIP étaient en effet, puisque les nouvelles passes seront disponibles à toutes les stations de la CTT.

J’aimerais remercier tous ceux et celles qui ont signé la pétition pour des Tarifs réduits et/ou auraient envoyé un courriel à la CTT. La solidarité étudiante est un merveilleux outil qui permet d’atteindre des résultats concrets!

Glendon Student Affairs is currently seeking applications for the Mature

Student Organization Coordinator. Application Deadline is Thursday,

November 19, 2009. Applicants must be available for an interview on

Friday, November 20 and meet all requirements listed below.

Duties:

• Coordinate activities for Mature Students, such as “brown-bag lunches”, movie nights, forums, etc.

• Attend student life and club events as a club leader (i.e. Clubs Conference, Clubs Day, etc.)

• Maintain official Club status with the Glendon College Student Union

• Manage club finances and funding applications

• Manage all club communications (bilingual), including posters, emails, blog, listserv, etc.

Qualifications:

• Upper year Glendon Mature Student

• Advanced communication skills

• Bilingual (English/French)

• Understanding of mature student population and their needs

Requirements:

• Has completed the online Student Financial Profile and demonstrates financial need as per this document.

• Enrolled and registered full-time for Fall 2009/Winter 2010 at York University

• Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person

Recently, four Glendonites participated in the York Debating Society’s Inter-College Debating Tournament. This is an annual event that brings together debaters from all Colleges to engage in friendly debate.

I am so proud to announce that both of our teams, consisting of Marco Glasman and Elsa Ascencio, and Deepthi Guttikonda and Maria Kogan broke (made it to) the semis! Three of the four Glendon debaters were also among the Top 5 debaters in the tournament.

Dear Glendonites,

Since the beginning of the summer, this year’s council has been hard at work to ensure that the Glendon College Student Union (GCSU) is at it’s most efficient and useful. Part of this year’s renaissance plan is the complete re-writing of the constitution. The council is striving to create a better constitution to ensure a functional, truly useful and dynamic student union.

However, we recognise that student feedback is an absolute necessity in the creation of such an important document. We want to accertain ourselves that if this constitution is to pass in the Fall elections, all interested members of the GCSU have had a chance to read and comment on it.

C’est depuis le début de l’été que votre conseil travaille sur de nouvelles initiatives pour l’Association étudiante de Collège Glendon (AÉCG) dans le but de la rendre aussi efficace et utile que possible. La réécriture de la constitution fait partie du grand plan de renouvellement de l’AÉCG. Le conseil cherche à produire une constitution mieux adaptée afin d’assurer une association étudiante utile et dynamique.

Toutefois, nous reconnaissons que les commentaires des étudiants et des étudiantes sont une nécessité dans la création d’un document aussi important. Nous voulons nous assurer que dans l’éventualité que cette constitution fasse objet d’un référendum, tous et toutes les membres de l’AÉCG ont pu y jeter un coup d’oeil.
